The Sperry-Perry Hotel built in 1856 sat on the spot where the current Murphy’s Hotel now rests. The
hotel was damaged by fire in 1859 but reopened in 1860. Guests at the hotel included Ulysses S.
Grant, Mark Twain and John Jacob Astor and Black Bart.

In 1882 the hotel was renamed as the Mitchler Hotel and then became the Murphy’s Hotel in 1945.

A registered California Historical Landmark, the Murphy’s hotel has played host to many guests and
according to legends, some of those guests and employees decided to stay.

There are many stories by employees and guests about the
ghosts which allegedly haunt the building.

Here are some of those accounts:

“I was pushing table 11 from 12 with my back to table 12. I heard a loud  “pop” and I turned around and a
glass that was nearly centered on the table had shattered with a napkin hanging off the side. I looked to
the people at table 5, confused and they said, ‘but you didn’t hit the table’.”

“I was making coffee and put the filter in the machine and pressed the start button. I walked into the
dining room and heard a loud crash . The entire metal filter container had sprung out and landed five
feet away from the machine.”

Mother woke up to some pressure on chest-can’t get up to leave room or move. Daughter in adjoining
room feels something wrap around neck.

“Banquet room- Did dinner up there and went to upstairs kitchen, came back out and drapes were
closed and hanging crazy. Pictures were placed on floor.”

“Banquet Room-Did dinner, everyone gone, doors at hutch opened all day. “

“I was cleaning and I heard crying in D’s office-door locked. D comes up minutes later and asks if I was in
the office, I said no-the office was unlocked.”

The day the current owner took ownership of the hotel, coffee filters flew into dining room, doors on
hutch opened all day and closed. Tripping by table 5 and Gold room.

Upstairs room beeper going off, open room, beeper turns off. A chair moved into the middle of the room
toilet flushes by itself, alarm goes off.

Glass coffee pots slammed into wall near waitress station. Could not believe they did not break.

Kitchen closed at night time. Employees were setting up for morning in dining room –can’t find cooks.
Went to kitchen, found them locked in dry storage. They were pounding and yelling to get out of there. A
table also moved.

Always hear someone calling a name or hear someone talking but can’t understand what they are saying.

Murphy’s Irish Day-Raining, bagpipes playing up stairs. See all the lights going in circles upstairs all the
way down hallway.

Rags to wipe table clean kept disappearing-5 in all.

Hostess left shoes one night. Couldn’t find them psychic said they were in room 16 –shoes were there.

These are just a few of the stories heard at the hotel. Perhaps it is the spirit hotel employees call Elenore
or perhaps it is other spirits from a bygone era.

This is the question that brought the California Haunts team to the hotel.
